Movin' Out
Went to see Movin' Out at the Sacramento Community Center Theatre yesterday afternoon. It was definitely different. Not at all what I expected, although I am not exactly sure what I expected. All I knew about the show was that Choreographer, Twyla Tharp, took Billy Joel songs and used them to tell a story about Tony, Brenda and Eddie.
Not sure I liked her interpretation of Joel's songs. (I am more of a romantic, I guess). I didn't see Brenda and Eddie, and Judy and James as so tragic. Then again, it was a fair interpretation. Just different from mine.
The cast we saw was nothing short of spectacular. The athleticism and agility was amazing. There were several cast changes at Showtime, and many of the leads were listed in the program as part of the ensemble. As fantastic as they were, there were a few moves that were a tad out of sync, but all-in-all very fine performances by all. Did make me wonder how "wowed" I would have been had we seen the leads as described in the program.
Once I got used to the notion that it wasn’t Billy Joel singing, that it was a live performance, not a recorded one, and the cast was not going to speak, I was completely won over.
